Should You Visit Jim Corbett or Bhimtal First on Your First Uttarakhand Trip?

Jim Corbett and Bhimtal look close together on a map. Plan them in the wrong order, though, and you can end up doubling back on hill roads, missing a safari slot, or starting your holiday tired.

For most travellers from Delhi NCR, the better order is Corbett first, then Bhimtal. Start with a resort in Jim Corbett while you're fresh for early safaris, then head up into the cooler hills to slow down. Finish in Bhimtal and head home through Kathgodam or Haldwani. There are exceptions, though, and the right order depends on how you're travelling, when, and what matters most to you.

Why Corbett First Usually Works Better

Starting your trip in Jim Corbett makes travel easier, helps you enjoy early morning safaris, and leaves the quieter hill experience of Bhimtal for the second half.

It's the natural first stop from Delhi.

Corbett sits at the edge of the plains. The drive from Delhi takes around six hours, and Ramnagar railway station is about 12 km from the park. You reach it before any serious mountain driving, which makes for an easier first day.

Safaris need energy

Corbett days start early. Morning safaris begin at dawn, and you'll want to be alert for them. In our view, it's better to do this at the start of the trip, when everyone is rested, than at the end, when the family is ready to slow down.

The hills make a good final stop.

Bhimtal suits the second half of a trip. Its pace is gentler: lake walks, forest trails, and quiet mornings with a view. Ending there lets you unwind before the drive home.

The way home is simpler

Bhimtal sits close to the main exit from the Kumaon hills. Kathgodam, its nearest railhead, is about 21 km away. If you're taking the train back to Delhi, finishing in Bhimtal shortens your last day.

When Bhimtal First Makes More Sense

Although Corbett first works well for most road trips from Delhi NCR, starting in Bhimtal can be more practical depending on your arrival point, safari availability, and travel priorities.

You're arriving by train at Kathgodam: If your outbound ticket is to Kathgodam, you're already close to Bhimtal. Starting there and ending in Corbett, then returning from Ramnagar, avoids backtracking.

Your safari permits are later in the trip: Safari permits are booked through the official Corbett Tiger Reserve portal by zone, date, and shift, separately from your hotel. If the dates you want are only available later, plan Bhimtal first and arrange the trip around your permit.

Kainchi Dham is your main reason to travel: If darshan is the priority, especially around the 15 June foundation day, start in the hills. You can then fit Corbett in afterwards with less pressure on your schedule.

How the Season Changes Your Plan

The best order also depends on when you visit Uttarakhand. Safari zone availability, weather conditions, and seasonal temperatures can influence how you divide your time between Jim Corbett and Bhimtal.

November to February

Both places work well. Corbett's main safari zones are open, including Dhikala, which reopens every year on 15 November after the monsoon. Expect cold mornings. Between December and February, temperatures in Corbett can fall to around 5°C. Pack layers for both stops.

March to mid-June

This is a popular time for both destinations. Afternoons in Corbett can get warm, so morning safaris are usually more comfortable. Bhimtal's cooler air makes a welcome change afterwards, which supports the Corbett-first order.

Monsoon months

Dhikala closes on 15 June, and Corbett's wildlife activity is more limited during the rains. If you're travelling from July to September, check which zones are open before you build the trip around Corbett. You may prefer to spend more nights in Bhimtal.

A Sample Five-Night Plan

This is an example to adapt, not a fixed schedule.

  • Days 1 to 2: Corbett. Drive from Delhi, check in, and take an afternoon safari if you have a permit. The next morning, take a dawn safari, then rest or go birdwatching.
  • Day 3: Move to Bhimtal. Leave Corbett after breakfast and drive into the hills. Settle in with a slow evening.
  • Days 4 to 5: Bhimtal. Spend time by the lake, visit Naukuchiatal or Kainchi Dham, and enjoy the forest walks.
  • Day 6: Head home via Kathgodam or Haldwani.

Ask your driver or resort for a realistic travel time between Corbett and Bhimtal. Mountain roads can take longer than distance suggests.

What to Look for at Each Stop

When comparing resorts in Jim Corbett, check the distance to your safari gate, early breakfast on safari days, and activities for the free afternoon.

In Bhimtal, look for quiet rooms, private outdoor space, and how easily you can reach the lake and nearby temples.

Choosing Your Route

For most first-time visitors from Delhi NCR, Corbett first and Bhimtal second makes the most sense: safaris while you're fresh, then the hills to slow down, then an easy exit through Kathgodam. Switch the order if your train, your safari permits, or a Kainchi Dham visit point the other way.
